Here is a short excerpt from the book:

“He stood in silence, watching her expression change from anguish to such blazing hatred that he turned to walk over to the child’s grave.

“You are a brilliant man,” she cried in frustration. “Somewhere in that closed face, you must have an excuse, not a reason, never a reason, but an excuse for what you’ve done.” She stopped on a choked, painful sob.

“You’re right, of course,” he said humbly, not looking at her but staring down at the small grave. “There’s no reason. I was angry and hurt … confused. But believe me,” his features twisted as he turned to her, “there’s no blame attached to you.”

In spite of her tear-blurred eyes, Peggy could see that her father was trembling and looked as pale as death. She stared at him, but she had gone through too much trauma to wonder at his pain. “Why didn’t you allow me to attend school here? Why was it more important than love or life or death for me to go away?” He only looked at her in sorrow.

After a long silence, she said slowly, “It’s not just about education is it? Tell me what it’s about? And why would you refuse to talk with me about it? Why did it have to come to this for you to allow me to speak? Had you been a stranger, it still wouldn’t have make sense, but you were my father who once loved me. However, you showed me clearly that I was an enemy of some sort. I was, and still am, too young to handle that absolute change from total love to total hostility. Adam had nothing to do with my rebellion about leaving Pecan Cove. I decided from the time I was fourteen, before Mother even died, that I would never leave home. I wasn’t going to go any farther away than Marshall. That is from my heart, Father. I love Pecan Cove, but, the truth is … oh, Father! It was you I loved.”

Those words shattered him, but she continued with relentless determination. “Mother said something about you having the ability to hide things from yourself … things that you couldn’t accept. Is that true?”

He listened to her words that hammered into his heart. She had never spoken in such a way to him and now the questions of the past three years came pouring out of her soul. They had always talked and he knew it had been devastating when he refused to discuss her life … refused to hear her opinion. Just as he had closed Mollie out before she died, he had shut out his own daughter.”
